British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was located in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several approach shafts leading to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
